We all just finished our fall break and moved on to Managua, Nicaragua, the Capitol of Nicaragua - both the Second poorest country in Central America/Caribbean (next to Haiti) and the 'safest' country in terms of violent crimes.
Here we study History and Womens Studies - specifically on NIcaragua and Political Science of Nicaragua, also we will live with Nicaragan families for 4 weeks of the 6 weeks we live here.
UPDATE:
Life is great, I love my group and loved both Guatemala and El Salvador (im sure ill love Nica too). Generally people say that when studying abroad the classes are easier... I wouldnt agree. My classes have been pretty intense because we not only study the subject but we live in it - in Guatemala we studied spanish and lived with a family trying to focus only on spanish for those 5 weeks. In El Salvador we studied Liberation Theology and lived in rural communities who were practicing liberation theology.
My two months and two country experiences have been really intense, really eye and mind opening. I have experienced and lived in poverty like never before. I have listened to countless firsthand stories of the brutal massacures and cival wars here. I lived in dirst floor houses, in ant and cockroach infested rooms and witnessed some pretty raw abuse, abuse of power over women here is extreme, abuse of power over the indegious populations is extreme and physical abuse of children and animals happens often in the same swing.
Dont get me wrong, I love this program, but its definently not your average abroad trip to somewhere like spain or austrlia(no offense to anyone).
I have more stories about reality here, that might make the average person uncomfortable, than stories about drinking and clubbing. (again no offence)
I also have countless stores about amazingly strong people and communities who have joined together under oppression to make new lives for themselves.
Central America, so far, is a country of extremes - extreme poverty, extreme capitalism and globialism, extreme U.S. influence, extreme post-war instability, extreme politics, extreme strength, extreme martyers, extreme stories and extreme history.
I have learned alot but not nearly enough - I am loving my experiences here even the cockroach filled ones...
I would love to share some stories with anyone! Call me up or e-mail me and ill reply!
ALSO - HOW ARE YOU? I want to hear how your live is and how your last two months have been. Update me, por favor.
I hope all is well in the states... well as well as they can be...
Paz y amor,
